Carrying my mother, Bob, and Papa, while in slow motion, a mountain junklie passed by, pumped his fist at me through the windshield of his Sprinter. He and I shared this moment. I was laughing and holding back tears at the same time. So much more than a runner's high: Pure gratitude for life.

The moment was never as vivid as today's run. I was passing the cemetery, the sun was throwing a golden bask across green valley in the shade of snowy peaks. Soren was nodding off as I started to "feel it". Blurting out "we're alive!" I burst into a sprint against the hill.
